Nisbet-Smith is a senior New Zealand painter who has consistently returned to his study of heads since the 1970s. His works are an uncompromising and determined display of the desire to paint.
Nisbet-Smith's paintings reflect a high order of skill, moving between rich colour and complex alla prima mixing, to loosely brushed backgrounds of indeterminate depths.
He has works in public collections including: Auckland
City Art Gallery, Auckland University Library, McDougal Art Gallery, Christchurch Dunedin City Art Gallery, Hocken Library, Dunedin, Waikato Museum of Art and History, Hamilton Chartwell Collection and Centre of Contemporary Art, Auckland.
